Listeners Top Ten Software List (Alex)

by @ 1:53 am.

I’m happy that Alex sent in his top ten list of Mac Software programs. As I said on the podcast, the fun of being a Mac lover is trying out great new software and I have to admit that some of the programs on the lists I’ve gotten are ones I’ve never looked at before. Thanks for sending them in and keep them coming! Alex was nice enough to send the price and a short description with his list.

1. Quicksilver - Free
2. VoodooPad - $25
Wiki-style notepad, great for organization.
3. VLC - Free/Open Source
Plays Almost Any Video NOTE:DOWNLOAD IT WHILE YOU CAN! See their site for details.
4. NetNewsWire - $25  RSS Reader
5. SubEthaEdit - Free for noncommercial use A text editor with colorized syntax for a variety of languages.
Similarly:
TextMate - $50 A Supposed BBEdit killer, has many more features than SubEthaEdit and
is more expensive, but is a lot cheaper than BBEdit (and Cocoa) without all of BBEdit’s bloat.
6. Adium - Free/Open Source
Instant messaging with multiple protocols.
7. SuperDuper - $20
Backup software with “smart backup.”
8. Vault - Free/Open Source
Securely store passwords etc…
9. Goldberg - Free
A simple and lightweight image editor.
10. Deep Notes - Free
A very lightweight and clean outliner, not too many features, but I don’t need many features.

What’s On Your Top Ten Mac Software List?

by @ 12:51 am.

If you’re listening to my podcast you’ll know I’ve given you three of my top ten Mac software products. They are OmniGraffle Pro, Notebook 2.0, and NetNewsWire. Each podcast I’ll review another one or two on my list. Thanks to David Blumenstein, a listener, he gave me an idea.

Send me your top ten Mac software list and I’ll post it here along with your name or your website if you’d rather. We’ll compare the items on our lists and see if we can find a common thread. Send your top ten list to me at surfbits at gmail dot com.

The only rules I’d like to follow is that we’re going to keep the big guys out of the mix. So try to think outside of Apple, Microsoft, Adobe products. The smaller the company the better. :-) Let’s hear it from you!
